What is Diabetes?
Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease that affects how your body turns food into energy. It occurs when the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin (Type 1) or when the body can't effectively use the insulin it produces (Type 2). The Three P's: Key Early Symptoms
The most common early signs of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) are often called the three P's:
- Polyuria (Frequent Urination): The kidneys work overtime to remove excess sugar from the blood, pulling water with it.
- Polydipsia (Increased Thirst): Due to the loss of fluids from frequent urination, you feel constantly thirsty.
- Polyphagia (Increased Hunger): Despite eating, your body's cells are starved of energy because glucose can't enter them efficiently.
Other Warning Signs
If left unchecked, other symptoms may appear:
- Extreme fatigue or lack of energy.
- Blurred vision.
- Slow-healing sores or frequent infections (skin, gums, bladder).
- Unexpected weight loss (often seen in Type 1).
Action is Critical: If you or a loved one experiences a combination of these symptoms, please consult a healthcare professional immediately for a blood glucose test. Early diagnosis and management are essential for preventing long-term complications.
